My Take
As one of the founding voices of the B-52s, Cindy Wilson is woven into the DNA of American new wave. What fascinates me is the contrast: that low, smoky contralto playing off Kate Pierson's soaring lines, all of it wrapped in the band's relentless party energy. Yet behind the camp and confetti sits real grief, the early loss of her brother and bandmate Ricky. That tension between joy and sorrow is exactly why her work resonates. Decades on, she's still performing, and I find her durable optimism quietly radical, proof that joy itself can be a form of defiance.
