My Take

Colin Hendry is a defender's defender, and I have a soft spot for the breed. At 185 cm out of Keith, Scotland, he was the spine of the Blackburn Rovers side that won the Premier League in 1995, an achievement that only looks more remarkable as money has reshaped the game; theirs was the last underdog title of its kind. The strikers get the cheers, but I am moved by the men who do the unglamorous work of marking the danger and protecting their own goal. That he turned to coaching afterward suggests he wanted to pass that defensive faith along. A wholehearted, Scottish-souled grafter, and I respect him for it.
