My Take
D'arcy Wretzky is, to me, the quietly essential foundation beneath the Smashing Pumpkins' wall of sound. Credited on their first six albums before leaving in 1999, she was never the front-facing figure, yet her bass anchored that swirling, overdriven sonic chaos and made it cohere. I value players like her who hold their own ground in a notoriously turbulent band without chasing the spotlight. Even her later step back from the music world reads as someone keeping to her own tempo. No flashy awards, but you simply cannot tell the story of that era's sound without her, and I quietly tip my hat.
