My Take

Damon Wayans strikes me as the engine room of the Wayans dynasty. Plenty of comedians can perform; far fewer can write, produce, and build shows that showcase an entire family of talent, and that architectural side of his career is what I admire most. In Living Color changed the texture of American sketch comedy, and his fingerprints are all over it. As a performer, his sweet spot is the tough exterior hiding genuine warmth — Major Payne is basically that idea stretched into a whole film. Even his brief Saturday Night Live stint tells me something: he was never built to borrow someone else's stage, only to own his.
