My Take

Danny Kirwan is one of Fleetwood Mac's underappreciated treasures. During the band's bluesiest stretch, from 1968 to 1972, his expressive, singing guitar lines and gift for melody quietly shaped their sound, even if he's often overshadowed by Peter Green. What moves me is the bittersweet arc that followed: he left young, and his later years were reportedly far from easy, a reminder of how thin the line can be between great sensitivity and great pain. I find myself returning to his playing now and then, dropping a needle on those records, grateful for the tender, aching tone he left behind.
