My Take

I'll be honest, almost nobody alive embodies "stillness as a superpower" the way Chishū Ryū does. He's the quiet old man at the center of so many Yasujirō Ozu films, sitting low to the floor, sipping tea, saying very little, and somehow breaking your heart anyway. What gets me is that he played fathers and grandfathers since he was young, decades before he actually looked the part, and you completely believe him every time. No yelling, no big tearful speeches, no reaching for the rafters, just a man being present in a room. A temple kid from Kumamoto who turned plainness into something close to sacred. I find myself drifting back to those Tokyo Story shots more than I'd admit. Some performers dazzle you; he just sits there and makes you feel like life was, on balance, okay.
