My Take

Ball is, to me, one of the sharpest anatomists of American discontent. American Beauty earned him the Oscar, but it's the long-form work, Six Feet Under and True Blood, where his real gift shows: peeling back suburban politeness to expose grief, desire, and rot underneath. Being an Atlanta native who graduated from Florida State, he writes the South's repression from the inside, which gives his stuff a lived-in sting. I'm drawn to writers who make discomfort feel honest rather than cheap, and Ball does exactly that. His Emmy and GLAAD recognition feel earned, not ceremonial.
