My Take

Darby Stanchfield is the kind of actress I think of as quietly indispensable. Before Scandal made Abby Whelan a name, she was already turning up in Mad Men, Jericho, and NCIS, steadily proving she could anchor a scene without demanding the spotlight. What strikes me is the Alaska-to-Washington-to-television arc, the unglamorous patience of building a resume role by role. Scandal finally gave her a part with real bite, and she met it. I have a soft spot for performers who earn their breakthrough through years of solid, unflashy work rather than overnight luck.
