My Take
Dave Barry is, in my view, proof that comedy can be serious work. Winning the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary on the strength of a humor column is a delightful subversion of what 'prestigious' writing is supposed to look like. For over two decades at the Miami Herald he found the absurdity in everyday American life and made it sing, then branched into novels and children's books. I admire writers who refuse to confuse solemnity with substance. Barry makes you laugh and, almost slyly, makes you think, which is a rarer combination than it sounds.
