Dave Mustaine

Dave Mustaine is proof that spite can be a renewable energy source. Being thrown out of Metallica in 1983 would have ended most careers; he answered by building Megadeth into one of thrash metal's defining bands, writing riffs so intricate they feel like grudges set to music. I will not pretend he is an easy figure, given how many feuds he has collected, but his persistence genuinely moves me. More than four decades on, he still plays with that snarling precision. Few musicians have turned personal grievance into such a durable and influential body of work, and I admire the stubbornness behind it.
