My Take
David Lynch is the rare filmmaker whose name became an adjective, and he earned it. What fascinates me is how a kid from small-town Montana developed such a polite, sunny exterior while making the most unsettling images in American cinema. Eraserhead still feels transmitted from another dimension, and Mulholland Drive might be the best film ever made about Hollywood's dream machinery. He won the Palme d'Or and a Golden Lion yet never once chased respectability. His death in early 2025 closed a chapter of cinema nobody can reopen. I keep returning to his work not to solve it, but to get lost in it — that, to me, is his genius.
Overview
David Keith Lynch (January 20, 1946 – January 16, 2025) was an American filmmaker, producer, actor, painter, and musician. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema, with his films often characterized by a distinctive surrealist sensibility that gave rise to the adjective "Lynchian".
