My Take
DeBlois belongs to a quiet club of animation directors whose names the public rarely learns, even as his films shape a generation. From Lilo & Stitch to the entire How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, what strikes me is his restraint: he trusts silence, lets a boy and a dragon say everything through movement rather than dialogue. The Annie Award feels almost beside the point. I admire that he never seems chasing spectacle for its own sake; there is a genuine tenderness and a coherent philosophy under the flying scenes. He is a craftsman who earns emotion honestly, and that is rare.
