My Take

Balke is the kind of artist I gravitate toward, a Norwegian jazz pianist who treats the keyboard as a laboratory rather than a stage. Leading the group Siwan, fusing Andalusian and Arabic textures with a Nordic restraint, he clearly cares more about discovery than applause. That he won the Buddyprisen back in 1984 tells me his peers recognized something rare early on, and the fact that his brother is a saxophonist hints at a household where music was simply the air they breathed. I admire musicians who keep chasing a sound only they can hear, and Balke reads as exactly that uncompromising.
