Demon Kakka

Demon Kakka is the longest-running piece of committed performance art in Japanese entertainment, and I mean that admiringly. The record says he was born in 1962; he maintains he is over a hundred thousand years old, being a demon. He has held that character since fronting the heavy metal band Seikima-II in the 1980s, went solo in 1990, and has since worked as an actor, film director and songwriter. The part that still amazes me is the sumo commentary. He turns up in full demonic makeup and delivers analysis more literate and better argued than most of the sport's own pundits. The Waseda education is clearly in there somewhere. Staying in costume for forty years while being taken seriously on serious subjects is far harder than it looks.
