My Take
Lehane writes Boston the way Faulkner wrote the South: the city is practically a character, full of grief, loyalty, and working-class menace. Mystic River alone would secure his legacy, but the fact that Clint Eastwood, Ben Affleck, and Martin Scorsese all turned his books into major films tells you how cinematic his storytelling is. What I love is that he never sacrifices literary weight for genre thrills; his crime novels ache. His move into prestige television with The Wire only deepened my respect. He's one of the few writers who can break your heart inside a page-turner, and I'll read anything he publishes.
