My Take

Derrek Lee is my kind of ballplayer: quietly excellent at both ends of the game. A 2003 World Series ring with the Marlins, the 2005 National League batting title, and a Gold Glove at first base add up to a complete player who never needed to shout about it. The journeyman path through San Diego, Florida, Chicago, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh only deepens my respect. I'm always more moved by the smooth, athletic first baseman scooping throws out of the dirt than by a flashy slugger. Lee, nicknamed D-Lee, was the rare guy who hit and fielded at an elite level, and that combination is genuinely valuable.
