My Take

Dion deserves far more name recognition than he gets, and I find that quietly unjust. As a Bronx-raised Italian American who led Dion and the Belmonts before going solo, he was arguably the most compelling rock and roll voice of the pre-British Invasion years. What impresses me is his refusal to stand still, doo-wop, pop, R&B, folk, blues all fold into his sound. The 1989 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction was overdue recognition. I love performers who keep singing on their own terms across decades, and Dion is exactly that kind of stubborn, soulful survivor.
