DJ Premier

DJ Premier sits, for me, in the very top tier of hip-hop craftsmen. Born Christopher Martin in Houston, he turned sampling and scratching into a signature so distinct that a single bar of his beat is instantly recognizable. His work with Guru in Gang Starr across seven albums helped define an entire sound, and what impresses me most is his refusal to chase trends. Decades on, Preemo still sounds like himself, gritty, soulful and uncompromising. I admire artists who build an aesthetic and defend it for a lifetime, and to me Premier is the definition of that integrity, a producer whose influence runs through the whole genre.
