My Take
Drew Goddard is one of those writers who makes you feel like you're in very safe, very clever hands — and then pulls the rug out from under you with a grin. Coming up through the Joss Whedon school of television on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and later Lost, he clearly learned how to make genre work feel emotionally alive rather than just mechanically scary. The Cabin in the Woods, which he co-wrote with Whedon and also directed, is probably his masterpiece so far: it's simultaneously a love letter to horror movies and a brilliant autopsy of why they work the way they do. Cloverfield showed he could translate that sensibility to found-footage blockbuster territory. What I love about Goddard is that there's always a genuine idea underneath the thrills — he's never just going through the motions.
