My Take
Dwight Yoakam is, to me, country music that refuses to be polished into nothing. Out of Pikeville, Kentucky, he broke through in 1986 with Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. and went on to stack ten studio albums for Reprise. What I admire is that he kept one boot planted in the dusty, twangy Bakersfield and Appalachian traditions while still sounding modern enough to win an Americana Artist of the Year award. The tight jeans, the tilted cowboy hat, the half-shadowed face, it is all part of an aesthetic he has owned for decades. He is also an actor and filmmaker, but it is that stubborn loyalty to his roots that I find genuinely cool.
