My Take
Earnie Shavers is proof that legend does not require a championship belt. With a 76.9 percent knockout rate and 23 first-round stoppages, he hit harder than almost anyone in heavyweight history, sharing the ring with Ali and Holmes. He fell short of a world title twice, yet I would argue the fear he inspired is its own crown. There is a romance to the puncher who never quite wins it all but whom no one ever wants to face. When he passed in 2022 at 78, what survived was that thunderous right hand, and honestly, that is the kind of immortality I respect most.
