Ed Hochuli

Ed Hochuli is one of my favorite kinds of figures: a man who excelled at two demanding careers at once. A practicing attorney from 1983 to 2021 and an NFL official from 1990 to 2017, he became famous for those muscular arms and, more endearingly, for explaining penalties with a lawyer's precision. I love that instinct; he clearly wanted spectators to understand the logic of the rules, not just the call. Refusing to coast in either the courtroom or the stadium, he embodies a kind of professional pride that I find genuinely inspiring.
