I'll be honest, Edgar Martínez is the guy who made me respect the designated hitter as a genuine craft and not just a "can't field" parking spot. The man was a hitting machine, all patience and precision, with one of the prettiest right-handed swings I've ever watched, and he spent his whole career with one team, the Mariners, which I find weirdly romantic in this era of everybody chasing the bag elsewhere.
