Edward Fitzalan-Howard, 18th Duke of Norfolk

Edward Fitzalan-Howard occupies a role almost impossible to grasp from outside Britain: as Earl Marshal and the most senior non-royal peer in England, he choreographs the ceremonies that define the nation's most solemn moments. I'm intrigued by lives that are essentially scripted from birth, where personal ambition matters less than the faithful continuation of centuries of tradition. Educated at Oxford and head of the House of Howard, he carries a weight of history most of us can scarcely imagine. Whatever one thinks of inherited privilege, there's something quietly dignified about discharging such a duty without spectacle.
