My Take

Ella Mai is, to me, one of the cleanest R&B success stories of the streaming era. An English singer who went from busking-style beginnings and a 2014 audition with The X Factor trio to actually breaking through with the slow-burn smash Boo'd Up, she rewrote what a UK R&B artist could achieve stateside. Her career launching out of London's BIMM institute and that 2015 EP Troubled showed she put in the apprenticeship before the fame. I love how unhurried her phrasing is, all texture and restraint. She proved real R&B never went anywhere, it just needed the right voice to remind everyone.

Her career began at London's British and Irish Modern Music Institute in 2014, during which time she auditioned as part of a trio on the 11th season of The X Factor. In 2015, she released her debut four-track solo extended play (EP), Troubled in October of that year.
