My Take

Eric Adams interests me as a study in biography as political brand. Brownsville-raised, more than twenty years in the NYPD rising to captain, then mayor of New York — it is the kind of bootstrap arc American politics is built to reward. I think his strength and weakness are the same trait: total confidence in his own street-level instincts over conventional expertise. His mayoralty from 2022 to 2025 will be argued over for years, but the underlying figure — a cop who critiqued policing from the inside, then sought to run the city it patrols — remains one of the more genuinely complicated characters in recent New York politics.
