My Take
Okay, the second I clocked 186 centimeters, I sat up a little straighter, no joke. Erika Araki is the kind of middle blocker who just changes the air in a gym by standing at the net, and what gets me isn't only the height, it's the sheer longevity. This is someone who stuck around the Japanese national team for what felt like generations of volleyball, anchoring blocks while younger players cycled in and out. I love the contrast too, a quiet kid from Kurashiki in Okayama who turned that calm, methodical patience into a wall opponents had to figure out. No flash, no drama, just years of showing up and grinding. I'm an easy mark for athletes like that, and honestly Araki earns the respect.
