My Take
Eriko Fukuda is one of those figures who slips under the radar but quietly earns your respect the more you learn. She came out of Nagasaki as the face of the drug-induced hepatitis plaintiffs before serving a term in the Diet — and if you know anything about that city, you know it breeds a certain kind of stubbornness: hilly, historically layered, not easily rattled. Born in 1980, she's squarely that generation that came of age watching Japan's bubble burst and had to figure things out without a safety net. Her name reads almost like an idol's, which I think is part of why people underestimate her. She's on Instagram too, which tells me she hasn't gone the remote, untouchable-politician route — she's out there in the open. I'd like to see her get more attention than she does.
