My Take
Ester Dean fascinates me as one of pop's great hidden architects. Long before audiences knew her face from Pitch Perfect, her hooks were echoing through songs for Rihanna, Katy Perry, Beyonce, and Nicki Minaj. There is something thrilling about a writer from Muskogee, Oklahoma quietly shaping a decade of chart-topping sound, reportedly improvising melodies straight into the booth. I admire that she can both craft hits for others and step into the spotlight herself. She rarely seeks the credit she deserves, but in my view her fingerprints are all over modern pop history, and that legacy is impossible to overstate.
