Etsushi Toyokawa

Etsushi Toyokawa was born in 1962 and won his newcomer award, the Elan d'or, in 1993. Do that arithmetic and you get a man officially recognized as a promising newcomer in his thirties, which tells you almost everything about the shape of his career. He is not a former teen star who burned through his appeal early. He is the other kind: someone who accumulated craft quietly for years until the mid-nineties, when Japanese audiences caught up to him all at once. That history is visible in the work itself. The 186 cm frame and the low, unhurried voice would read as posturing on a younger actor with nothing behind them. On him, the pauses do the acting. He can stand still and make it mean something, and that is a skill that only arrives with mileage. He is also credited as a screenwriter, and I doubt that is incidental. Actors who understand how a scene is built tend to play the architecture rather than just the lines. Born in Yao, Osaka, educated at Kwansei Gakuin University, and exactly the sort of performer who becomes more dangerous with age, not less.
