My Take

Fernandel is the kind of artist I find myself rooting for across the decades. That long, horse-like grin out of 1900s Marseille carried a warmth that needed no translation, and he poured it into vaudeville, operetta, song, and film alike. The Legion of Honour and a Golden Leopard are nice, but his real monument is the laughter he gave ordinary people, especially as the gentle country priest he made famous. He died over fifty years ago, yet that smile hasn't aged a day. I hold comedians in the highest regard, and few embodied generous, sunlit joy as fully as he did.
