My Take

Frances Magnes, an American violinist born in Cleveland in 1919 and passing in 2010, lived nearly a full century devoted to the strings, and that span alone moves me. To play through the upheavals of the twentieth century, the wars and the Depression, while keeping a bow in hand speaks to a deep, durable love of music. Cleveland, home to a storied orchestra, is a fitting cradle for such a life. The records left to us are slim, but the notes she sent ringing through concert halls surely lodged in someone's memory. She has my quiet, sincere respect.
