My Take
François Ozon is, for my money, one of the most reliably surprising directors working in France. I love how he marries aesthetic elegance with a sly, sometimes wicked sense of humor, treating sexuality and identity with a freedom too few filmmakers dare to match. His recurring meditations on death, transience, and the slipperiness of reality give his work real weight beneath the polish. That he writes, edits, and even operates camera tells me he is a true auteur who trusts his own hand. The Silver Bear and his honors confirm it, but it is his playful seriousness that keeps me watching.
