My Take

Freddy Fender's voice gets to me. Born Baldemar Garza Huerta in San Benito, Texas, he blended country, Tejano, rockabilly, swamp pop and Tex-Mex into a sound nobody else could replicate. Through solo work and groups like the Texas Tornados and Los Super Seven, he carried both Mexican-American soul and the dust of the American South in every note. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was the least he earned. He passed in 2006, but the music still aches in the best way. To me he was the real thing, an artist whose roots and feeling could never be faked.
