Fukase

Fukase, the frontman of SEKAI NO OWARI, has an origin story unusual for a Japanese pop star. He left high school, spent time abroad, and has spoken openly for years about being hospitalised as a young man when his mental health gave out, without ever turning it into tragedy or marketing. The music came afterwards: he formed the band with childhood friends and, having nowhere to play, they built their own live venue in Tokyo. People who rent a stage want to be discovered; people who build one are trying to survive. Musically they are impossible to pin down. Line up RPG, Dragon Night and the sharp-tongued Habit and they barely sound like the same group. Under the pop surface the instinct is theatrical: he builds small worlds and performs inside them. He also acts and writes picture books, which reads less like collecting hobbies than like overflow.
