My Take

Gaizka Mendieta remains one of my favorite midfielders to think about. At Valencia he was the engine of a side that reached the heights of European football, a technically gifted, two-way player who could create and finish in equal measure. What I love is the afterlife: he traded the pitch for the turntables and became a disc jockey. There is something poetic in a man whose game was built on rhythm and timing finding a new stage built on exactly those qualities. Reinventing one talent into another takes both humility and curiosity, and Mendieta clearly has both.
