Gaku Hirasawa

Gaku Hirasawa is the kind of athlete who makes you do a double-take — born in Tokyo, he went to junior high in the ski town of Yamanouchi, trained at Stratton Mountain School in the US, and skied slalom at two Olympics. Alpine skiing is brutal, technical, and demands a lifestyle built around mountains, and he fully committed to it. At 178 cm he'd have a solid, lean racer's frame, and I can picture him absolutely folding himself into that aggressive tuck, carving through gates with total focus. Now mayor of Yamanouchi, he clearly chose his own path and didn't need anyone's approval to do it.
