My Take

Gareth Edwards is one of those directors who genuinely earned his seat at the blockbuster table rather than being handed it. He made Monsters in 2010 almost entirely by himself — writing, directing, shooting, and doing the visual effects on a shoestring — and that scrappy, atmospheric film was proof of concept enough to land him Godzilla and then Rogue One. Rogue One is, I'd argue, the best standalone Star Wars film Disney has produced: it's tense, it respects the audience, and that final Darth Vader hallway scene is one of the most purely cinematic moments of the 2010s. The Creator in 2023 showed he hasn't lost his eye for scale on a fraction of the usual budget. He's a filmmaker's filmmaker, and I'm always glad when he gets a greenlight.
