My Take
Gary Locke is a genuinely historic figure, and I don't say that lightly. As the 21st governor of Washington he became the first Chinese American governor and the first Asian American governor in the mainland United States, which reshaped what people thought was possible in American politics. From Seattle's Franklin High School to Yale, then governorship and a diplomatic career, his path is a study in steady, principled ambition. The honorary doctorate from Peking University hints at how naturally he bridged American and Chinese worlds. Trailblazers like Locke carry a double burden of representation, and he seems to have carried it with composure.
