My Take
Gene Wilder remains my gold standard for comic acting because he understood that comedy is built on stillness. Watch him in Young Frankenstein or as Willy Wonka: the long quiet beat before the eruption is where the genius lives, a rhythm he clearly carried over from the stage. His pairings with Mel Brooks and Richard Pryor produced some of the warmest laughter American film has ever recorded, yet there was always melancholy behind those eyes, and that sadness is what made the jokes land so deep. He died in 2016, but his timing has not aged a day. I revisit his films the way other people revisit comfort food.
