My Take
George Kooymans earns my lasting respect. As the founder of Golden Earring, he wrote "Twilight Zone," the band's lone U.S. top-ten hit, and that riff still lives in my head decades later. What I admire most is that he was a true author of his music, not just a player. His ALS diagnosis and 2021 retirement, followed by his passing in 2025, give his story a quiet weight. To leave even one song lodged in the world's memory is a genuine triumph, and the Silver Harp winner from The Hague did far more than that. A real musician.
