Mariko Shinoda

I've always thought Mariko Shinoda had a quality that never quite fit the standard idol mold, and I mean that as a compliment. There she was, a Fukuoka girl who landed right in the center of AKB48, the biggest idol machine in the country, yet she carried this cool, grown-up poise while everyone around her bounced with sugar-rush energy. She even captained Team A. What I really respect is that she never coasted on the idol fame; she launched her own label, ricori, in 2012 while still in the group (it closed in 2014), and after graduating kept reinventing herself as a model and an actress, like sitting still just wasn't an option. At 167cm she photographs like a star, but she always read to me as refreshingly down-to-earth, and that mix is exactly why I find her easy to keep rooting for. Her private life has made headlines too: infidelity allegations in 2022, which she denied, a divorce in 2023, and a second marriage in 2026.
