My Take
George Martin is, in my view, the most important hidden hand in modern pop. The "fifth Beatle" label undersells him; he was the classically trained craftsman who translated four restless young men's instincts into era-defining records, then stepped out of the spotlight he had every right to claim. Knighthoods, a Grammy for Album of the Year, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, all deserved, but what moves me is the humility. He believed in other people's genius and served it. His death in 2016 felt like losing a load-bearing pillar of music itself.
