Géza Röhrig

Géza Röhrig is one of the most remarkable acting discoveries I can think of. A Budapest poet with a Kossuth Prize, he took the lead in Son of Saul and delivered a performance of almost unbearable interior weight, helping it win at Cannes and the Academy Awards. I'm convinced his background as a poet is precisely why he could hold such devastating silences. He acts from a place of language and memory rather than technique. To me he isn't merely an actor but a witness, and his gaze carries a moral gravity that's rare on screen.
