My Take
Gore Verbinski is one of those directors who doesn't get nearly enough credit for how genuinely weird and ambitious he's willing to go. Sure, he turned Pirates of the Caribbean into a billion-dollar franchise — three films, all of them spectacularly overstuffed in the best possible way — but what really gets me is Rango. An Academy Award-winning animated Western where Johnny Depp voices a chameleon having an existential crisis? That's not a pitch that gets greenlit on a normal Tuesday, and yet Verbinski pulled it off so well it swept the awards circuit in 2012. Before all that, he remade The Ring and made it legitimately terrifying. The man just has a knack for maximalist, slightly unhinged cinema that somehow holds together. He's the rare blockbuster director who seems to be having a genuinely strange time, and I mean that as the highest compliment.
