My Take
Gregg Popovich is, without question, the gold standard of NBA coaching — five championships with the San Antonio Spurs, three Coach of the Year awards, and a 29-year run as head coach that no one in any major American sport has come close to matching. What I love about Pop is that he never chased the spotlight; he built something methodical and relentless in San Antonio while everyone else was obsessing over superstar drama. The Tim Duncan era, the Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili years, that gorgeous 2014 title run — it was basketball as craft, not circus. And then there's the other Pop: the guy who tells reporters "that's a stupid question" with zero apology, speaks openly about racial justice when most coaches dodge, and somehow earns more loyalty from his players for it. A true original.
