My Take
Gregg Turkington fascinates me for his sheer commitment to the bit. Born in Darwin, Australia in 1967, he is an actor, musician and music journalist, but I know him best as Neil Hamburger, the deliberately unfunny stand-up persona he has refined since the 1990s. On On Cinema he plays a grotesque version of himself, and the calibrated blend of self-sabotage and provocation is hypnotic. He chose the harder path, abandoning easy laughs for an acquired taste that only the initiated truly get. I find that kind of uncompromising weirdness genuinely brave, and I admire how he has elevated anti-comedy into something close to an art form.
