Gregory van der Wiel

Gregory van der Wiel represents a very Dutch ideal to me: the technically gifted, attack-minded full-back forged in the Ajax academy. Winning the Johan Cruyff Award as the country's best young player in 2010 is no small thing, since carrying that name is a genuine badge of honor in Dutch football. I am also oddly fond of his journeyman path through Paris Saint-Germain, Fenerbahce, Cagliari and Toronto. It speaks to a player who chased the game across continents rather than settling for comfort. He was an early template for the modern overlapping right-back, and I see in his story both real flair and the quieter grind behind it.
