My Take

Ferzan Özpetek interests me precisely because he belongs to two worlds and fully to neither. Born in Istanbul, rooted in Rome since the seventies, he turns that in-between status into his great subject: strangers who become chosen family. Films like Hamam, Facing Windows and Loose Cannons carry a tenderness toward loneliness that I think only an outsider could reach. Despite a shelf of Italian honors, including a David di Donatello and a Globo d'oro, there is no pomposity in his work. He directs human warmth without sentimentality, and that balance is harder than it looks. I find him genuinely moving.
