My Take

Caillebotte is one of my favourite Impressionists precisely because he sits slightly apart from the movement. His brushwork is crisper and more structured than his peers', and a canvas like Paris Street; Rainy Day captures the damp, hushed mood of the modern city with astonishing precision. Yet what moves me even more is his generosity: born into wealth, he chose to bankroll fellow painters and amass the works that would later anchor great museums. He could have hoarded his talent and money, but instead he gave the movement room to breathe. Dying at forty-five, he left both paintings and a legacy far larger than himself.
